This is a review of two short stories, "Murder By Night" and "The Valentine Murder' by Mignon G. Eberhart. They are found in her anthology titled "Mignon G. Eberhart's Best Mystery Stories." I will be reading and writing reviews on the different stories in this collection.

In these two stories, Mignon G. Eberhart features James Wickwire as the sleuth who is going to investigate the crime.

Let's look at the first story.

Murder By Night

James Wickwire is the senior vice president of a bank that he has worked at for years and the sleuth.

To begin with, Lassiter Wells is killed. Some people think he committed suicide, but he didn't. Whoever forged Horace Wells' name on a check is the one who killed Lassiter Wells, who is Horace Wells' nephew. There are three suspects who are listed in the story. They are John Murdock, the farm manager, Lisa Benly, an assistant, and Chloe Henderson, a young widow who is a guest at Horace Wells' house.

All three of these people had motives to kill Lassiter and forge Horace's name on the check. However, only one of them committed the murder.

James Wickwire started to investigate the crime. He had a photograph that was taken at the bank by the security camera. The teller pushed the button near her that was connected to the security camera. As a result, the person forging the check got his/her picture taken. However, the photograph didn't come out as clear as it should have, so James Wickwire couldn't recognize the person. He decided to set a trap to catch the villain. Now, you'll have to read the story to find out what happened.

The Valentine Murder

Ronald Murch entered the bank to cash a check which was given to him by Clarissa Hartridge. Ronald Murch was selling a formula for face cream that he had created. He was going to take the money and marry Miss April Moon, or was he?

He planned on marrying April Moon, but it didn't work out. He was murdered in the library at Clarissa's house. When Clarissa saw that he was dead, she called James, the bank manager and sleuth. He came over right away and talked with the police. They found out who committed the crime and why. Now, you'll have to read the story to find out what happened.

I recommend these stories. They are easy to read and are well written. Both stories are written in the first person viewpoint. I think anyone who is interested in a good mystery will enjoy reading these stories.
