The mission style revived in 20th century encompassing all the components such as Moorish, Spanish, Spanish colonial and Native American. It has evolved both multi-dimentionally and multi-cuturally. 1990s Mission style resembles the experimental and inspirational spirit of 1890s.
However, there are lots of changes in the lifestyle of the people today. In the past, fireplace was the place for family gathering while today it is the television. Today families need modern living and dining rooms and kitchens, which has forced designers to have flexibility in the interior style. Since, Mission style has simple and pure forms; it could accommodate many new styles such as Shaker, Japanese and English. Mission style is so versatile that it can go with any style of the house, be it a bungalow or a penthouse. Certain characteristics of Mission style are still popular today such as Imposing wooden furniture, patterned tiles, hand-loomed textiles and handmade pottery. The familiar components of mission style architecture such as, arcades, stucco plaster, courtyards, fountains have become major elements of many houses today. Mission style today has become California style. The dramatic effect has been achieved by painting the walls in soft textured Mediterranean colors and blending Old World antiques and furnishings with that. Mission style colors were natural, earthy. Walls in today’s interior are decorated using these colors and the pure, natural accents such as metal or stained glass lamps. The Spanish style accent pieces made of wrought iron are popular too. However, White walls, dark woods and clay tiles are not the only colors of mission style now. Modern Mission palette also includes interesting materials and textures and techniques. People have option choosing between more conservative furniture and blending various styles to achieve dramatic effect. The basic mission palette for furniture is dark stained oak, brass or copper hardware and leather upholstery. However, today various colors and upholstery has replaced this basic style. New Mexico is the place to study mission style furniture. Today’s mission style furniture is experimental and more innovative. It is designed to fit any kid of interior and style of the house. They are produced in styles that can blend with light western woods like pine and alder. The furniture, like the design style has incorporated shaker and Japanese style. Since many influences represented mission style, just like the furniture, the range of accessories is vast too. Mission style is playful and romantic.
