Italian style has been admired all over the world for its extraordinary creativity. Fantasy, sense of proportion and color are the features common to both, modern and traditional Italian design. Since there is a fine balance between industry and craftsmanship even the industrial products in Italy has the uniqueness of the products produced by the artisans. Italian style strikes the balance between old and new. Since there is no single Italian style, defining it is a complex process. Italian interior design, whether it be traditional, modern or avant- reflects the Italian passion for quality. Each of these styles uses contrast as their key feature. They also mix period styles and blend them finely to achieve a unique design style. In Italy most designers are architects thus they have a unique sense of context of space in which they must operate. They strive for a balance between furniture, decorative objects, and household equipment. These things are tied together with a harmonious blend of color, material and dimensions. Many Italian rooms have museum like proportions. They have high ceilings, thick walls and marble floors. Since these high ceilings give a feeling of openness, Italian design lacks coziness of English or French style. Due to these same features, Italian design style does not encourage over furnishing or over accessorizing. Living room or soggiorno is the largest room in the house. It is mainly used for large gatherings. Usually this room is supplemented with smaller sitting rooms, salotti. They offer more informal entertaining. In modern apartments sometimes two or three rooms are combined together to make living room. Living rooms also serve as dining and family rooms. In Italy meals and snacks is quite a ritual. Most of the families gather for that in the dining room thus dining room is another important place for the family. Extravagant bath is a ritual in Italy. Special attention is given while decorating bathrooms. They usually have lavish floor and wall treatments. Their décor is also quite lavish. Since blending of the periods is a specialty of Italian design very rarely traditional houses are furnished with the antiques from one period. Modern Italian design is highly creative and unique as Italian designers are very flexible and they adapt to marketplace quite effortlessly. Aesthetic consideration is also blended with economic point of view. Thus Italian design is suitable for all socio-economic groups. No Italian design can be complete without hand-painted furniture. Italian hand-painted furniture is heavier in its lines and is more emphatic in its decoration. Though Italian lacquered furniture appears in variety of colors, cream is the most favored color for the background. This leaves room for other colors in design. Go To Page: 1 2
