Mexican style

Mexico has a long and rich history of design. Though Mexico has played a very important role in traditional and contemporary design Mexican design always stayed confined within the boundaries of Mexico. The possible reasons for this lack of publicity might be the lack of interest in local culture and the exclusive use of Spanish language. Some antique dealers and designers were drawn to these unexplored treasures in early 1970 and opened it to the rest of the world. Since then Mexican style has taken its place in the international market.

For centuries craftsmen have combined beauty with function. Mostly natural and recycled materials are used to create beautiful objects like furniture, vessels, artistic pieces and religious objects. Folk arts like weaving, pottery and silver work were part of Mexican culture for a long time. However after the Spanish conquest artisans were introduced to European art. This nice blend of native and European culture produced a unique designing style.

Though urban life is greatly influenced by western culture real Mexico can still be found in countryside. The elements here reflect a wide variety of Indian, European and pre-Colombian design styles.

Mexican people are very orderly and this reflects in everything right from the arrangement of objects in their shops to displaying artwork in their homes. They seem to focus a lot on the entrances of the house. A variety of entrance doors right frem simple paneled wood to raised patterns and grooved panel outlines can be found in the villages. Distinctive use of color is an essential part of their design. In any village even the smallest house has colorfully painted doorways and facades. Red, green and blue colors are used in abundance. Showcase for displaying art items is something that almost every villager can afford to keep in his house.

If you desire to have an exclusive possession of some handcrafted vessel or object Mexico is the place to go. Here almost every handcrafted vessel and object is made unique yet they are abundant. Every vessel has its own carving history.

Religion plays an important role in Mexico. No house is without a crucifix or a statue of a saint. Most of the families follow one saint or another.

Mexican style furniture is quite versatile. The same object can have multiple functions. Tables are the most versatile among these pieces. They are always moving between home and work. No house is without shelves and closets to maintain order in the house.
