Are you clear about office policies? Is there a charge for no shows and late cancellations? What does the clinician charge for after-hours calls? What are the office hours? If you're not clear about any of these things, ask.

AFTER THE FIRST APPOINTMENT


The clinician will most likely ask you to schedule a return appointment in a week or two. When you schedule an appointment, keep it, especially if there is medication involved.

Ask yourself if you liked the clinician. Is this someone with whom you can work? Do you trust her? Can you be completely open and honest with her? If so, you're on your way to your healing journey.

Taking some of what can seem like mysticism out of making and keeping that first appointment with a mental health provider goes a long way toward empowering someone to do so.
