Back to School

Well, its back to school time again! Now is a great opportunity to get back into the habit of brushing two times a day and flossing. During the summer months, many children "s (not to mention adult's!) brushing habits fall to the wayside in favor of last minute trips to the beach and late night Saturday's at the drive-in.

Here's a list of helpful hints to get your youngster back on track.

1.The chart: Yes, we are all tired of the infamous chart, but it is a system that works. Set up a chart for each child. Place a sticker on the appropriate day and time for when your child brushes. They love to see all the stickers add up at the end of the week!

2.Allow enough time: Toddlers and new-to-school children probably need at least an hour in the morning and evening to complete all the tasks they need to do. My young patients always tell me that they don't brush their teeth before school because, "they will miss the bus". Allow plenty time.

3.Sing a "brushing song": to your child while he or she brushes.

4.Use a timer: Set a two-minute timer while your child brushes. Children especially love the old-fashioned sand and hourglass type.

5.Set the example: Your child will not want to brush if they don't see you brushing your own teeth. They will feel that brushing is a chore for children only! Offer them the chance to mimic your GOOD habits!

6.Explain, explain, explain: A lot of children don't know WHY they have to brush. Children are naturally hungry for knowledge, so let them know they have plaque in their mouths that needs to be removed every day, to avoid getting cavities or gum disease. Have the dental hygienist show them what plaque bacteria looks like and the best ways to clean it away.

The best habits start at an early age, so give your child the support they need to make brushing and flossing a life-long habit!

Happy flossing!
