Things to do in Copenhagen for the Holidays....

The stores are open long hours and the streets are decorated with hanging ornaments and lights in all thinkable colors. If lucky there will be snow for the holidays and that makes it possible to go sleigh riding and maybe even cross country skiing in the parks or out at the country side. The all time favotrite place to go to enjoy the holiday spirit is down-town Copenhagen. On the town square the huge Christmas tree is standing with all its lights and from there going for a stroll down Stoeget would be the obvious thing to do.... Down Stoeget all the little stores and shops have their window decorations exhibited and Christmas music of all kind is sounding out the open doors. Street musicians and the Salvation Army are out singing Christmas carols trying to get some money together for each their cause. If cold from walking around there are plenty of both out- and indoor cafes where you can enjoy a cup of hot glogg, tea, coffee or elderberry cider. Maybe even with a slize of homemade pie or some apple dumplings. Here and there a guy will have a stand with a small roaster on which he grills chestnuts and sells them for a fair price. Christmas time is the only time you can find this tasty treat in the streets of Copenhagen. As something completely new just started this year, you can now go ice skating on the plaza at the end of Stroeget called Kongens Nytorv. Normally this plaza was the center of a roundabout but this year they have iced it down and it is described as 'very cozy and old-fashioned looking'. Right pass Kongens Nytorv you'll reach Nyhavn (the New Harbor), where as another new thing this year, you can now besides from enjoying the beautiful sailboats there, also enjoy a Christmas marked wit all kinds of souvenirs, Danish Christmas foods, Glogg, etc and even Santa Claus has said to be stopping by this year..... At the opposite end of Stroeget you'll find Tivoli, which each year opens its gates for their own Christmas marked,- the biggest to find in Copenhagen with tons of Christmas stands, food and drinks stands, a huge indoor santa-town, various amusements for the kids and the lake and the gardens are beautifully decorated with thousands and yet thousands of lights.
