In Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling" the main character learns that he is not an ugly and forsaken duck, but rather a beautiful swan. Because of this story, swans hold a special place in the hearts of Danes. No wonder they hand out Golden Swans every summer. This year organizers are promising films with heart.

The Golden Swan is the name of the award that winners receive at the Third Annual Copenhagen International Film Festival. This year it is being held August 18-28.

"Life is a Miracle"/"Zivot Je Cudo" by Emir Kusturicarica opens one of the more well-known film events in Europe.

Jacob Neiiendam, the head of programming said it will feature more than 111 touching, comedic, innovative, popular and provocative films as well as art house, alternative and gripping independent films from a host of European nations.

Nicolasi Roeg is president of the jury conducting the official selection and 10 European films are competing. Rumanian Cristi Puius' "Death of Mr. Lazarescu", winner of Un Certain Regard's First Prize at Cannes this year, and Denmark's Jannik Johansen's film entry, "Murk".

Something that also makes it a special film festival is its focus on women in an indiustry dominated by men. There will again be a special award for the best female director, chosen by a jury of prominent Danish women.

A special event is organized for international film buyers August 23-24.

Diplomacy will also play a role as the embassies of various countries have a hand in selecting films for the competition.
