FDA Cites Safety Concerns with Nasal Flu Spray

The panel's decision has forced Aviron, the manufacturer of the mist, to hold off on marketing the vaccine for the coming flu season, marking the second year that Aviron has had to forego selling the nasal vaccine. The company also tried to bring the spray to market in 1999.

Flu and flu-related illnesses cause approximately 20,000 deaths annually in the United States, primarily in the elderly population. About 100,000 Americans are hospitalized each year for flu-related symptoms, as well. Flu season runs from October through March.
