DESIGNING SMALL SPACESIf you are using painted furniture, painting all the pieces in the same base color gives the room unity. I've also noticed that when I keep my colors in the same tones, it helps me avoid the look of clutter. For instance, I wanted to use roses in my bedroom but I didn't want it to look like a giant rosebush. ;-) By using different tones of pinks and reds, I was able to use many different patterns. This also enabled me to add subtle punches of other colors such as yellow, sage and powder blue. So far the effect is just what I wanted. Furniture with exposed legs help to make a space look larger, also. Sofas without a skirt around the bottom, as well as, ottomans and lounge chairs with legs exposed. This perpetuates the idea of more floor space. Even the legs of your tables could be thinner to help with the look. Don't feel you have to buy a lot of small pieces of furniture. The result could seem cluttered and crowded. Instead try buying large substantial pieces to set your background. Then carefully choose your accent pieces. Most important, don't be afraid to try new things. There are many sites if you click on links above, that will give you many more tips for decorating your small space!
