CREATING A SPA-LIKE BATHThe bathroom is usually one of the last rooms to get attention when it comes to decorating. But for me, it was one of the first. After all, what is one thing we all look forward to after a long hard day..., a hot bath or shower! It may seem our hands are tied because of renting. In actuality, you can create quite a relaxing spa atmosphere whether renter or owner, and it doesn't have to be expensive. There are so many elements on the market today to take your bathroom from rustic to elegant. My dream bath would be of an elegant European Style. A deep whirlpool bath and tiled floors with an underfloor heating system, a sink set in an antique cabinet with an antique mirror above. The lighting would be sconces on either side of the mirror with crystal accents hanging from each. I would have a double tiered towel rack with a built in heating system. The shower would be seperate with a built-in seat with multiple shower heads. I could go on and on, after all, this is only a dream for now. :) But lets talk reality and the present. I live on a limited budget and I'm a renter, thus I had to be more creative to make my bathroom the comfortable and relaxing haven I desired. The easiest way was to change the color from an off white to a soft, mottled cornflower blue. I achieved this by painting the entire room, including the ceiling, with the cornflower blue. After allowing the walls to dry, I made a mixture of equal parts of water, the blue paint, a clear glaze and white paint. Using a large, dry brush, I lightly brushed over the walls, being careful to wipe my brush often so as not to let the paint build up. The result was a soft cloudy look with a slight sheen. This took me roughly half a day to do. But that is because of health/disability limitations, I had to pace myself and rest often. It would normally only take about an hour or two. Now that I have the background of my room, I can began to accessorize. For those who can't paint, this will be the key to you achieving the look you want. I am using gardening as the main theme of my bathroom. I have a collection of watering cans, as well as, two framed prints of watering cans holding a bouquet of flowers. I also have a collection of whimsical frogs that I will be scattering around the room. I plan on doing a mural of a picket fence with a garden scene half way up the one large wall. The two prints will hang over a shelf above the toilet.
