RECLAIMING SPARE ROOMS/Office2

Your kids have grown up and gone to college or moved out to their own apartments, thus leaving an empty room. You've decided to make the spare room into your very own office. Or perhaps, you just bought a new home with a spare room. You have made up your mind to make an office out of that room. But so far it has become a catchall room. You know, the room where you put things when you don't know where to put it. Even though your computer and files are there, you find yourself using the kitchen table more and more because everything that doesn't have a proper place gets tossed in that room. How do you go about making that mess into an office? Have heart! A solution is possible! First, we plan! You want to make a list of the answers to the following questions and any others that may apply: What will you be using your office for? Will you be seeing clients/customers or is it just for your personal business? Once you've figured out the main purpose of your office, then you want to make a list of needs according to that purpose. For example, if you will see clients you will need more furniture. Maybe a couple of chairs and lamps is all you have space for. Will you have lots of files, requiring extra storage or will one bookshelf and a file cabinet suffice? Just how much space do you have? Will you be able to fit everything without it looking cluttered? Okay, now that you've figured out the details, let's reclaim the space. Empty the room if possible and give yourself a clean slate to work with. If you have your desk and computer already there it's okay to leave it, as long as you don't intend to make changes to the floor.

Now the fun begins! You need a theme! First because it keeps you focused and second it makes it much easier when going over your list of needs. Let's start with paint. What mood do you want to convey when in the office? This should greatly influence your choice of color. If you want to present a formal business atmosphere, you wouldn't likely have your office in primary colors! On the other hand, if your business is selling crafts or possibly a childcare center, you might like something bold and whimsical.
