One of my favorite decorating activities is trying different faux treatments. Whether using paint, wallpaper, glazes or texturing, it allows you to release your creative juices and expand your imagination. Also, you can use them on just about any surface, including the floor.
The ceiling is a surface that is often forgotten or ignored. But it actually offers us another surface to express ourselves. For a custom look try using a wallpaper border on the ceiling just above the crown molding. Also, if you have strong arms and a flexible neck, you can add stencils to your ceiling. Possibly creating a sky effect with a trellis of roses twining across it. Another great technique, is creating the rich look of leather on your walls or on wood furniture pieces. It is created by using paper bags and paint. You simply tear the brown paper into random pieces and crumble them up. Then you smooth them out slightly and apply to the wall with wallpaper paste. Vary the size and amount of wrinkle in your pieces to get a better effect. Once the walls are dry and you like the look, you can add a clear polyurethane to protect the finish. But, if you would like the coloring to be deeper or in a different color you would add the paint before the polyurethane finish. Start by deciding your color. If you just want it to be a darker brown or caramel color, you can roll over the walls with the color which has one third clear glaze added to it. If going for a different color all together then I prefer to paint the wall with a brush in a crosshatch motion. This seems to make the color stand out more in the crannys and give a more indepth effect. Follow this up with the poly finish. This effects looks great as a wainscoting or below the chair rail. This is a very simple and an inexpensive way to change your look. :) The different techniques that can be achieved with paint and glaze or stain are almost unlimited. I find it helpful to get a piece of spare wood to practice the techniques before actually applying it to my project. Use your imagination and create your own faux technique. Go To Page: 1
