CREATING A YOU-NIQUE KITCHEN

The kitchen is one of my favorite spaces to decorate. It doesn't have to be expensive and there are so many choices. The colors, designs, accents, and subject matter are endless. My favorite part is the shopping! You can find many unusual and unique pieces in some of the most interesting places. It is these unusual finds that help make the space uniquely yours!

In this article, I would like to share how I have been working on my kitchen to make it you-niquely mine! :) My present design is French Country with roosters. It wasn't a planned design, but I kind of grew into it by buying things I liked. It started when I found a cute set of limoge dinnerware at a local thrift store. I fell in love with the colors and design. Then a few months later I found this border that coordinated nicely with the dishes. This you can see in the following photo. I also had a collection of blue and white dishes that I was using along with this. I was pretty happy and satisfied with the look for awhile. LOL!

Until I went shopping at a local fleamart and I saw this beautiful large ceramic rooster. I had to buy it. The feathers had all the colors I loved. Also, it had cobalt blue in the plumage which matched the blue and white dinnerware I had on display. From then on I started collecting roosters that coordinated.

Now the look is more predominantly roosters, which reminds me more of what a french country kitchen would look like! Eventually, I removed the border and did a paint treatments on the wall, as seen here.

Since the room opens onto my livingroom, I will be using the same golden yellow colors in the kitchen to tie the rooms together. I will continue the burnt orange paint treatment above the sink and around the sliding door that I used on the wall with the brick bottom. This lightens up both rooms and makes the kitchen wall seem to move further back and the room look larger! I have a large checkered fabric in tone on tone yellows that I plan on mounting above the sliding door as a pelmet/cornice.

I've accumulated enough of a collection now to have a grand time accessorizing. :) But of course, there is always room for one more piece!

You can find a few photos of my kitchen in progress here!
