WARMING WITH COLOR and TEXTURE

Its winter for most of us now. The weather may be cold and dreary. So how can we bring warmth and coziness to a room in the cold of winter? By using color to change the mood of a room.

It isn't too difficult to find colors to create warmth and coziness. For example, there are the colors we find while gazing into the flames of a fireplace or campfire. The yellows can range from a bright sunflower to bronze golds. The oranges are varied with tangerine, terra cotta and other spicy colors. The red exudes the very thought of heat and can range crimson to paprika and beyond. By mixing these colors you can create the warmth of a favorite blanket around your space.

Colors of nature also can bring warmth, such as, the variety of greens of tree leaves, plants, and grass. The many shades of the barks of trees in taupe, rust, and browns. Even blue, which is usually considered a cool color, such as navy and midnite can bring warmth when used with other warm colors. Now that we have are thoughts racing with color, lets add some texture.

Think of your favorite cloth against your skin. What comes to mind? For me it would be my favorite crocheted blanket or maybe the flannel pajamas that have been washed until they are a great fluff! :) This is how I like to combine my colors and textures to create a warm and welcoming space for family and friends.

Imagine you have large quilted floor pillows made of overly-washed flannel tossed in front of the fireplace. You have them in sumptuous jeweltones of navy, chestnut, hunter and copper. You curl up in your overstuffed wingback chair of plaid taupe and burgundy. You wrap up in your favorite chenille quilt in hues of burgundy, navy and gold. Your curtains are a taupe and cream damask. Your sofa is a warm taupe chenille and covered with many toss pillows of velvet, tapestries, velour and silks in coordinating colors. The room size rug is a soft berber in a scroll design in tones of chestnut, taupe, and burgundy on a cream background. It sits on beautiful hard oak planked floors which glow in the light of the fire.

The walls are textured and washed with neutral shades of creams and taupe. You've surrounded yourself with family photos and mirrors to reflect the light. There are many candles to keep a warm glow at night and to tickle the senses all day.
