Decorating With HouseplantsWhen I moved into my first apartment, the only furniture I had was a bedroom set. But my livingroom looked lively and fresh because I had began a collection of houseplants while living at home. To my amazement, I had enough houseplants to fill the empty corners and keep it from looking so bare. The best thing I love about decorating with houseplants is: that they don't have to be expensive, its a great hobby, it goes with any decor, can find a plant to match any style, most people like to give them as housewarming gifts and they look great with white walls. The downside is if you don't get the right type for your life style. For instance, getting a plant that needs constant attention and watering. If you work long hours and live alone, then this type of plant might not be the best choice for you. You also want to buy plants with similar needs, especially if you are a beginner. You wouldn't want to group azaleas and a cactus. Their lighting and watering needs are very different. The amount of floor space may dictate the size of your plants, but remember hanging plants from the ceiling or a beam as well as putting them on top of shelves. I like placing a number of plants with similar lighting and watering needs in a large basket lined with plastic. Then I cover the tops of the plants with spanish moss. By placing a tall plant in the middle, it looks as if there is one large planter. A well placed up light behind the basket makes for a grand show in the evenings. There are many types of houseplants, some of which can also be grown outside. If you like flowers the color span is delightful. My personal favorites are the greenery of all textures and varieties. If you don't have any experience growing houseplants, I would suggest buying a book or better yet ask a friend who has a nice collection. They will probably be glad to give you suggestions as well as share clippings from their own plants.
