Even though Jan is mean, snotty and bratty, no one deserves to be raped. I have long thought that Jan was more talk than she was action when it came to sex and her conversations with Shawn show that to be true. Her tough girl exterior could be just a cover for a very vulnerable, lonely girl who is mean to others in order to gain attention. Only this time it was definitely the wrong person who paid attention-Paul.
Paul has been a creep from day one on the show. Just looking at him is enough to give anyone the creeps. And he has had his sights set on Jan from the moment the island trip started. And Jan, being the lonely and deep down vulnerable girl she is loved that attention and possibility of stardom that Paul was offering her. But he was only out for himself and Jan is now paying the price.
The show has taken several teen couples from barely friends to hopping into bed in record time this summer. And then the rape storyline comes along. Not only will it profoundly affect Jan but the aftermath will affect the other teens who are in a rush to have sex as well. If the show writes it as I see them doing it, the rape story will be used as a teaching tool on the hazards of unprotected sex. Yes, I think Jan will end up pregnant. The rape and the pregnancy will shock couples like Shawn and Belle and Mimi and Kevin into the realities of what sex really can mean if you are not truly prepared.
While the rape story is horrible and Jan will suffer tremendously because of it, the other side of the story will be to show the other teens the repercussions of rushing into sex. The story could be compelling and sad on the one hand and educational on the other. IF the show writes it the way it should be written. And as we all know that's a big if.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Will Jan be changed? And if so, for the better or for the worse? Will the other teens take a step back from their rush to sex? Will Paul pay for his crimes? All of these stories will be interesting to watch unfold. It looks like the next few months could definitely be worth watching.
