Gay Jack

So in order to keep Greta acting like his girlfriend but keep her from thinking they have a future, Jack tells the poor girl he is gay. Only Jack could come up with a scheme like this. It is classic Jack, classic.

This storyline has the potential to be a huge success, funny and classic or a huge failure, offensive and derogatory. Which it will be relies heavily on both the writers and the actors involved. Matthew Ashford will play Jack as brilliantly as he always does. Humorous but with a biting edge. Funny but with a certain sadness at how his life has turned out thus far. He is great at playing this part. And his claim to being gay will only make for more scenes of both humor and vulnerability.

But the writers are another story all together. No one can be sure that the writing will convey the message that this story is obviously trying to get across. Jack needs a pretend girlfriend but not one who is going to fall in love with him.

The huge failure could come in if the story is viewed as a ridicule of gay men. Some people may be offended by the very fact that a character they have known for years is now even pretending to be something they know he isn't.

I tend to think that the first will happen, or at least I hope it will. This story has the potential to mushroom into quite an affair and Jack will be trying to keep all his stories and all his women straight. It could be hilarious and touching.

I know a lot of fans who shook their heads and said, this story sounds just awful. But I am going to give it the benefit of the doubt just because I think if anyone can pull this off and make it a memorable story it is Matthew Ashford. And I can't wait to watch him try.
