Daytime soap operas have long stayed away from larger sized women. They routinely cast only very thin, very beautiful women and ignore larger sized women. Only a few have dared to break this tradition and cast larger women and Days is one of them.
When the show cast Patrika D'Arbo as Nancy Wesley I thought that it was great. She is a very talented actress and very beautiful but she is not thin. I was very glad to see that they had cast her and were actually going to use her in main, front burner storylines and not as a "gimmick" for stories about large women and low self esteem. Well no longer. The show has cast a new teen who is also not thin. They seem to have specifically cast her to use her as a "gimmick" about large women and low self esteem and how kids are mean to one another. Along this storyline the show has decided to take the once very strong minded and very confident Nancy and make her into a doubting, less confident woman. Why? Can a large woman not be happy with herself? Not be confident and beautiful? It appears that on soaps that perhaps they can not. Not only is the show going to have Nancy doubting herself, but they are going to give her health problems as well. I know there are large women who have low self esteem and I also know there are large women who have health problems, but why would the show shift gears with Nancy in the middle of the story? Before Susan appeared Nancy was confident, beautiful, sexy and healthy. And now she is losing all of those things. The show seems determined to make Susan an "example", a "gimmick" and they intend to take Nancy with her. There are rumors that a teen suicide may be on the horizon this summer and ten to one it is Susan they have in mind. Soaps are famous for bringing on "gimmick" characters then killing them off. I just hope that they don't ruin the wonderful character of Nancy in the process. Go To Page: 1
