I have to admit that I was surprised by the show this week in more ways than one. I didn't think that the Coronation story held much promise but some of the story has been very good, some bad and some downright ugly.
Let's start with the good. The aftermath of the shooting had some of the best writing and acting Days has had in a long time. Poor Angela's death scene with Brandon, Moroni, Sami and Kate was great soap opera. Angela really loved Brandon and of course she believed that he loved her. Brandon felt extreme guilt because he had been using Angela all along and she gave her life to protect him. Moroni was overcome with grief and guilt that he had caused his own daughter to be killed. Sami felt bad for Angela but was not about to give up her desire for the tape. And Kate showed just how truly cold hearted she is when she didn't care about anything or anyone but getting her hands on the tape. The whole scene was excellent and very well done by all the actors involved. The bad part of this past week was that Days felt it had to resort to extreme violence to get people to tune in to the show. I know this is just a soap opera and that movies and tv have a lot more violence in them, but this show is absolutely trying to market itself to a very young, teen audience. I think that the over the top shooting up of the whole room with machine guns was just too much. I know that the shootings were done to move the story along, like Angela and Victor, but to shoot up the place with machine guns wielded by psycho hit men is just violence for violence sake. If Days is going to promote itself to young people then they should be a little more responsible with storylines. The ugly is without a doubt Kate's character. Sami fits in ther a little as well as she took time out of watching people die all around her to stick it to Kate. But Kate could have cared less about people dying. All she wanted was that tape and even with Angela breathing her last breaths she is hovering like a vulture waiting for scraps. Kate's character has been reduced to a cold hearted witch that would give up anything, including her children, to keep herself out of jail. And you know what, I think the show is going to let her get away with it all. Even if the show doesn't send her to jail I think the guilt over Victor's "death", her children turning against her and whatever happens with Lucas will be a great deal of punishment for her.
