Royal Coronation or Royal Coronary? The upcoming royal coronation of Greta as a princess is going to be a main focus for February sweeps and I have got to wonder why. Maybe I am just not as emotionally involved as the show thinks fans should be, but this storyline as a main player for February sweeps seems a bit of a stretch. Sweeps periods are supposed to be filled with some kind of secret revelation, some excitement, something to get the fans tuned in. The coronation storyline doesn't have any of those things. The thought of Austin and Greta smiling dumbly and shaking hands with supposed European royalty just doesn't sound like sweeps material to me. The rumors surrounding the coronation are leaking that someone will be killed. Well since it has also been leaked that the show is going to use a bunch of ex soap stars to stand around and look pretty at the coronation you can bet dollars to donuts it will be one of them that bites the big one. That is supposed to be the fans sweeps excitement. Well I am not excited. While it will be nice to see the ex soap stars on television again, to see them just standing around sipping champagne is not what I would have in mind for actors of this caliber. The stunt is of course a way to try and lure soap viewers who miss these actors to tune in. A ratings ploy that I don't think is going to give the expected returns. If the show wanted to boost the ratings for sweeps they should reveal that John is the father of Hope's baby to all of Salem, or that Brandon is Abe's son, or that Marlo is the dead body. But instead they choose to have a coronation that is about as exciting as watching paint dry. And people wonder why soap ratings are suffering. Days has always been slow to reveal secrets and I really didn't expect that to change, but I did expect them to have something more for a big sweeps period. I may be surprised by the storyline and come back and write that the people at Days are geniuses, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
