Breaking Up Is Good To DoThe break up of John and Marlena is not only good to do, it's good soap opera. The very popular couple have been going through the tortures of a big breakup and it's making them even more popular. John and Marlena have been headed for a break up ever since John started having his flashback memories of his time with Stefano as a mercenary. Add to that the fact that John slept with Hope when she thought she was Princess Gina and the return of the not so perfect Brady and you have a classic soap opera bust up. The break up has shown both John and Marlena in different lights. John has been willing to do almost anything to protect and help his son Brady, including breaking the law and going up against some of his very best friends. Granted, not all of John's actions stem from Brady some of it is left over mercenary stuff from Stefano. But it has shown that John is not the goody goody everyone thought he was. Marlena on the other hand has been shown as a flawed character. Something the show has stayed away from for the most part. Marlena has always been shown as the good one, the one with all the answers, able to solve all the problems of Salem. Not so with this break up. Marlena has been revealed as something less than perfect and that's a good thing. The break up of a very popular couple can be a hazardous thing. The show can start doing things with the characters that the fans don't want to see, like pairing them with other characters. But showing them struggling, having real flaws and making their way back to one another eventually is the stuff soap operas are made for and soap opera fans long for. The John and Marlena break up is good for Days and good for Days fans. Soap opera stories are not reality but it's good to see that the characters are not all perfect and have wonderful lives every single day. Romance that has to struggle to be found is the best kind of romance. I look forward to more of the break up and the reunion down the road...way down the road I hope.
