Frugal DayliliesInexpensive Daylilies
Affordable Daylilies! You've seen the fancy catalogues with the $100 and up price tags. We won't go into the discussion about whether they are worth it. In the hybridizers mind and for those of us who can afford to buy them, they are worth it! There is a group of avid gardeners out there who love Daylilies, but just can't afford to spend that much on a single plant. This column is for the group that loves Daylilies, but is limited on their spending. Name that Daylily We will begin with the pinks. How about SO EXCITED (RaHansen). This flower is a dusty rose-pink with a large raspberry eye. It is semi-evergreen in habit, scapes 28", blooms 5.5," and blooms in the mid-season just when color is becoming scarce. Reblooms are a bonus. Lady bug Gardens of Florida has it for $8.50. Another pink is AH YOUTH (D. Simpson). It is a clear pink with a darker pink halo. it is semi-evergreen in habit, with scapes of 15," blooms 2.25," and makes a beautiful clump. You can purchase it from Marietta Gardens, P.O. box 70, Marietta NC, 28362-0070. It is about $6.00. The recommendations above came from Rebecca E. Hinshaw. Thanks, Rebecca! One pale pink that is a personal favorite is FAIRY TALE PINK (Pierce). It is a lovely pale peachy pink bloom, that is 24" tall, has 5 1/2" flowers, blooms in the middle of the season and reblooms. Oakes sells it for about $10.00. You can call their 800 number at no charge to order any of their Daylilies. The number is 1-800-532-9545.
A Little Bit of Yellow How about the yellow Daylilies that range in color from a pale frosted yellow to an intense gold. One of the favorites in Tennessee is JEN MELON (Oakes). The plant is 26" tall, has a 7" bloom in the later part of the season AND it reblooms! It is bright golden and has a pronounced ruffling along the edges with a pale green throat. As if that were not enough, it is also very fragrant! It costs about $10.00. You can use the toll-free number to order it from Oakes. Another one from Oakes is SO LOVELY (Lenington). The color is near white, but is actually a pale yellow. It is 30" tall, has a 6" bloom and is a late bloomer. it is very fragrant. One interesting fact about this plant is that it forms proliferations (new plants) on its stems! Just cut them off and root them.
