Interplanting Daylilies with Perennials When I first began to garden, I was really into perennials and herbs. When daylilies entered my life, they just took over all my beds. Now, the time seems to be right to enter a period of balance. When you look at the Daylily Journal for the landscaping pictures, it is quite evident that many perennials will grow quite happily with the daylilies.
What Plants Grow with Daylilies? The first thing you need to know is plant only those perennials whose cultural requirements match those of the daylilies. Daylilies don't ask much of gardeners - well drained soil, water, sunshine, and a little fertilizer. When these requirements are met, most daylilies increase the number of their fans. Some daylilies are more prolific than others. While my DOUBLE DELIGHT has put up many fans, ELIZABETH SALTER is reluctant to increase. You may have to watch the spacing in your beds. Use the AHS check lists to see the height and how quick the plant may increase your daylily may be and space accordingly. You can purchase the AHS check lists from the following address: Bill Reinke, Publication Sales, 3223 Gum Flat Road, Bells, TN 38006Prices vary according to the check list. If you are interested, just send me e-mail and I will return all the information to you. Daylily Height and Flower Size When you begin to look at catalogues for daylilies, you will see both height and flower size. Pay attention to the height and don't put the tall daylilies in front of the smaller ones! How do I know this? Experience is a very good teacher. Combination Perennial Recommendations I love the colors blue and gold together as well as pink and white. One of the plants that I like to combine with daylilies is Coreopsis. It is from one to three feet tall and spreads from two to three feet. The flower is yellow or pink. The pink one has more finely divided foilage. It blooms throughout the summer and attracts both birds and butterflies. It likes the same soil culture that daylilies do. It also comes in several other colors such as white and pale yellow. Coreopsis is a hardy easy to care for perennial. Another flower that combines well with daylilies is the coneflower. It comes in purple or white. I have a photo of the purple one but not the white. This is the same plant used for medical purposes (enhances your immune system). It blooms constantly and blooms last a long time. Insects don't seem to bother it either. Go To Page: 1 2
