Do a Good Deed for Mother's Day

Well, my computer crashed and I've done diagnostics and defragmented it so I hope that this will get posted.

When I was driving past the Beaver Dam Baptist church, I saw many daylilies all around that church, just blooming their little heads off. It was beautiful and I wondered who did this. His name is Paul Howard and he is a heart patient. More on him later. Stay tuned as he is napping. I will add more about him after I talk to him.

Talked to Paul just a few minutes ago. He is 78 years young. He says he lived in Memphis for 36 years and didn't have the time to grow daylilies. But, when he moved to Knoxville, he met Hansel Ireland, who was a certified judge of daylilies. Hansel taught him to hybridize. Paul grew over 200 daylilies. He says that when his church put in gardens around and in their parking lot, he asked if they would like some daylilies. Someone else takes care of them. Now, he lives in a smaller place and can't take care of a large yard. He misses his daylilies so I offered to let him see mine. Sharing your garden with others is one of life's little pleasures.

Have you wondered what to do with all your extra daylilies? Instead of selling them, I want to challenge you to find a place in your community to place the extra and make the earth just a little more beautiful. That is what Paul did.

How about a contest? If you would send pictures about where you would like to plant, then do it. Send me pictures after you complete the planting. We will reward the winner with a special book. If you don't have enough flowers, ask some friends. Get others involved!

When performing an errand, I saw daylilies at the entrance of a sub-division. When I asked about them, a neighbor said that one of the retired men had started it because he couldn't stand how weedy it had been. He has died and I don't know his name, but I am going to find out. It would be a good memorial for him. By the way, others in the sub-division have taken over the weeding and the planting.

My mother always said that we should leave the earth in better shape then when we arrived. I think this is one way to do it.
