Well, the holidays are over and I am sitting at my desk looking at snow. Yes, snow in Tennessee. We have had this snow on the ground for the last month! It has been so cold that it hasn't melted! I can just barely see some tips of the daylilies that are the evergreen type. I was pulling my hair, trying to think about what topic this column should address, when I got a catalogue in the mail. You know catalogues used to be the only things that I had to look forward to in January. This catalogue was different. It listed lots of names and prices. The prices were reasonable, but I missed those fancy pictures of flowers that you can only dream about. (Well, let me correct this thought. There were some pictures, a georgeous one of CLEAN HEART on the cover. It was a new introduction. Even for a new introduction, it was reasonable priced at $35.) You know, the ones that cost between $100 and $200 dollars per plant. Sometimes you only get one fan of those! I just can't do it. Not only am I on a limited budget since I retired, but putting an expensive plant with no assurance that it would survive the winter is not for the faint of heart. Back to this catalogue. It was from Daylilies in the Country. It is run by Lynn and Melissa Arnold. The location is in Surrency, Georgia. There is a map in the book that carefully explains how to get there, but the best part is their web site. It will eventually have pictures of all the flowers that are listed. This could be a method that puts the printers of daylily catalogues out of business. At least the ones that create the color catalogues. What a feast! I found a few of my favorites such as ELIZABETH SALTER for $15. I can remember when it was a lot more. COURT MAGICIAN was $12. DARING DELIMMA was $10. They had several of my favorite Munson daylilies such as EMPEROR BUTTERFLY ($8) AND IDA'S MAGIC ($30).If you like Stamile's daylilies (and who doesn't) you will find a broad selection. They have everything from FIRE AND FOG to BETTER THAN EVER. Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Luke 12:27 Go To Page: 1 2
