A Little of This and That About Daylilies

December Thoughts

Taking Stock

This time of year, I find myself evaluating what went right in my garden and what went wrong. I list the plants that did well and where they were. Did they get lots of sunshine, water, and mulch? Do I think it did well because of its heredity or did I have to coddle it. I don't do coddling well. A plant has to be tough to make it in my garden. That is why I have daylilies, hostas, coreopsis, coral bells and daisies of all kinds. I love roses, but the spraying that is necessary in Tennessee limits my choices.

Anyhow, this is my report of the daylilies that grew well in my garden this year. I will tell you that I like rebloomers. I love STELLA IN YELLOW from Oakes. I am planning on hybridizing with this one. I did make several crosses and will let you know what the seedlings look like. It seemed that STELLA D' ORO just produces more STELLA D' ORO!

Things are definitely looking up with ROSY RETURNS from Apps. I also like his PARDON ME. I just got this one and clipped off the blooms that were on it when I planted it. I just hate doing that BUT I was rewarded when this plant produced bloom after bloom! HAPPY RETURNS just wasn't happy, but I know it will do better next year. I think it was under too much shade. My husband removed a tree, and he really doesn't like to cut down trees. He prefers to plant them! I still hold much hope for this plant. I've seen it in other gardens and it just blooms prolifically.

I must say that I admire the rebloomers that Mr. Apps has produced. Interviewing him would be interesting. s I didn't buy ROSY RETURNS yet , but maybe next year.

Last year I bought MOUNTAIN VIOLET and SWIRLING WATER. They were beautiful and SWIRLING WATER was covered with blooms. MOUNTAIN VIOLET even rebloomed. SO LOVELY just bloomed and bloomed. It is really so lovely. There are images of these in my article about purple daylilies.

Daylily Gifts for Christmas

Before I go I want to put a plug in for Cedarthorn Gardens. They have a calendar for sale that is just beautiful. It would make a lovely Christmas gift.It is called "Daylilies in the Landscape."
