Winter Dreaming

Winter is Coming

Haven't you wondered what daylily enthusiasts do during the winter season? Take a tip from one armchair gardener and settle back in your easy chair, with the fireplace burning, and order catalogues that provide a feast for the soul. Almost every gardener dreams of having the perfect garden with plants of optimum health, beautifully arranged. Now is the season to get out your dreams, dust them off, and begin again. It doesn't matter that slugs may have eaten holes in your otherwise perfect plants. Next year is the opportunity to begin again. So settle back and take a tour of several catalogues that you may want to order. There are both on-line and mail order catalogues.

Oakes Daylilies

I mention them first because they have such a distinctive catalog. The pictures are in full color and the descriptions are elegant but honest. Some catalogs do not furnish entirely accurate pictures, but I am satisfied that Oakes does not purposely mislead their customers. They have always been very helpful when you have questions. You may order either on-line or call their toll-free number at 1-800-532-9545. You may also fax your order at 1-423-688-8186. Please see the link to their on-line catalogue under the preferred links on this page.

They introduced 40 new varieties this year alone! Red Volunteer and Corrytown Pink are two of their older introductions.

Send catalogue requests to the following address:

Oakes Daylilies
5204 Monday Road
Corryton, TN 37721

The catalogs are free when you pick them up, but there is a small postage charge of two dollars if you order them. There is a black and white catalogue for collectors that is one dollar. A wholesale catalogue is available to licensed members of the nursery industry and parks, gardens and arboretums.

Sunshine Hollow

While this grower does not have a color catalog, their plants are so healthy and grow so well that I want to mention them. They are located in Athens, Tennessee. Joe and Vicki Rhyne have about 150 acres of forested hollow and a beautiful lake. The grounds are well landscaped with daylilies and hostas. If you take a group there, plan ahead for the Rhynes to cater a lunch. Vicki is a wonderful cook. They also make fruitcakes for Christmas delivery. (Yum!) We'll visit them sometime for an interview for the column. They are interesting folks.

You can e-mail them at sunhol@cococo.net or phone for information at 423-745-4289. They also have a fax number at 423-745-2936.

Their address is shown below:

Sunshine Hollow
198 County Road52
Athens, TN 37303
