Potting New Plants

So, your planting was successful. Now, what do you do with all the little seedlings?

Get those four-inch pots out — or two inch if you want to transplant again. When the second set of leaves appears, clean any used pots, cover their drainage hole with a pot shard, and fill with good all purpose potting soil. When you use a larger pot, be careful when watering and don't over-water.

Since those seedlings are in a loose soil mix, just turn the container on its side and press. The seedlings will come right out. Carefully, take the young plant and plant it just like you would if it were going outside. Make a hole in the soil, pour some soil in a cone shape in the center. Spread the little roots out, then pour some soil over them. Tamp gently, then water — and wait for flowers! Planting daylily seeds is so much fun because you never know what you might get! Maybe you will get a plant you can sell for $100!

Well, we all need dreams, don't we?

Some of my seedlings from that first attempt are in the top row of flowers in the picture below. Good luck and let me know if you need help.

We will talk about catalogues next time.

Ellen,

A couple of years ago, I planted some daylily seeds using planting instructions exactly like yours....except for the fork, the fungicide, and the razor, that is.

May I add one caveat? ...
