Daylily Shows
The Daylily Show I really didn't think I would want to discuss a flower show, but this year I volunteered to help at our local show because I felt sorry for the show chairperson, Geraldine Couturier. She made this amazing appeal at one of our local Daylily meetings. I volunteered in March. Since I was a technical writer, I thought that I could at least write down the rules. What an awakening this has turned out to be. Did I say that this show is also combined with our annual plant sale? We use the profits from that to supply scholar ships for the University of Tennessee and other stuff. It seems that you have to pick a place to have the show, get publicity for it, not to mention getting judges when everyone else is having their own shows at the same time! You also must get the ribbons and trophies taken care of at least six months in advance. She asked for set-up volunteers. We were amazed when she got so many. Of course, I volunteered to help set up. The previous year was the year I helped divide and label all the plants that we would sell. That was a fun time, but the next day I was really tired. Several of our group are retired and they never complained, so I couldn't either until now. The whole process starts with getting Daylilies ready for the show. Someone also has to truck them to the place where we have the show and place them on tables. The next little interchange settled the price at which we would sell the plants. "What do we charge for these plants?" "I think about four dollars a clump." Don't you just love it when a plan comes together? Next we went to the U.T. campus to set up the room. As you can see by the next picture. The tables were covered by the time I arrived at 6:30 P.M. Gosh! They said they were going to start at 6:00 P.M. and work until it was completed. How did this all happen so fast? Geraldine told me that it was a smaller room and all the chairs were already up. That made me feel a little better. They decided to incorporate a plant grooming session with the setup. I guess they thought more people would come and they were right. That is how they got done so early!
