"The Summer So Far..."

Summertime, and the Music is High-Quality
"Rolling Stone" has published a virtual exposé regarding The Lillywhite Sessions, which according to the article, are officially known to the band and others as "The Summer So Far." The title was supposedly written across the discs given to Steve Lillywhite and band members following the album-in-the-making's demise. But, for the time being, we'll continue to refer to the songs as The Lillywhite Sessions.

Oh, Drama!
Calling The Lillywhite Sessions controversy "...the most compelling mini-drama of the Napster age," the article answers questions (and generates even more controversy) regarding the album's creation and its leakage onto the 'Net and features input from Steve Lillywhite himself.

Are The Lillywhite Sessions to Live On?
One of the most significant remarks comes from Bruce Flohr, A&R Vice President of RCA records. Flohr stated that DMB intends to release The Lillywhite Sessions songs in the future: "Down the line, the band will finish the record in the way it was intended to be finished," he said.

One has to wonder about the validity of that statement since it was just a matter of weeks ago in a chat that Dave himself said that a studio release of the songs wasn't very likely! I mentioned it in last week's article:

"...a fan asked if The Lillywhite Sessions would ever be officially released. In a round-about way, the answer seemed to be no. It sounds like Dave thinks what we have now (MP3's from the 'Net and concert performances) should suffice. He said:

'It would be strange to go backwards. I love that album...But for us to go back to it and relive those 5 months we took making it, would be silly.'"

So, is a studio release of The Sessions going to happen? Looks like that depends on who you believe... Dave or the record exec?

The Raw and the Cooked...
Lillywhite says if it is going to happen, there is a significant amount of work left to be done. He remarked that "Bartender," "Busted Stuff" and "Diggin' a Ditch" are, for all intents and purposes, good enough as they are. He said the remainder of the songs that make up The Sessions still need a lot of work.

Could it be Live?
Yet another possibilty is that since the songs are being performed on the summer tour that they will be recorded and released from a concert. The article suggests that some of the songs may appear on a live album to possibly be released by the end of the year.
