DMB Speaks Out about the Lillywhite Tracks

DMB has spoken out at Entertainment Weekly's Web site in regard to the shelved Lillywhite tracks being released on the Internet. The interview with Boyd, Dave, Stefan and Carter feature their opinions about The Lillywhite Sessions, a companion to last week's review of the tracks in the print version of EW. Here are a few points that the band made:

  • When the news of the first album being shelved came about, we couldn't help but think Dave, or someone else in the band, was displeased with the material. Later when Dave said it was just that the album was "too dark," fans bristled -- we like it when Dave talks about God and dying and depression. It's real life! Not to mention that musically the album flat out kicks butt. Can anyone argue that "Bartender" is not one of the most amazing DMB songs of all time? The album's lyrics and music can be summed up overall as breath-taking. The good news is that Dave knows just how good the tracks on Sessions are: "I'll never think of it as being less than some of the best stuff I've ever done... There's some of the best lyrics I've ever written in there as well."
  • Fans in chats and message boards continue to spar about the comparison of the two albums. Some say Everyday has no redeeming qualities; others think the two are too different to compare; still others think Sessions blows the rest of DMB's albums out of the water, bar none. Guess what -- Dave knows we're arguing over Everyday versus Sessions. And he likes it: "[Since fans are] ...fighting one against the other is great, because I made both of them. 'That one's way better than this one -- what the f--- were they thinking?' ...WE thought both of them up -- so thank you for at least having a conversation about both of them." In other words, Dave is telling us to not dismiss Everyday just because Sessions is so good.

  • Can he pick a favorite child? Dave has likened comparing his songs or albums to this question before. That is, picking a favorite song is like saying you love one of your kids more than another. If we were to ask him straight out which he prefers, Everyday or Sessions, it seems likely we'd get the same answer EW got... He thinks both albums rock: "I love both albums; it's just that the one was more eagerly received."
