"Everyday" Hits Shelves: Part Two

Everyday Still on Top!

According to Billboard.com, DMB's Everyday has spent a second week at the number one spot, selling 280,000 copies this past week. Seminal rockers Aerosmith's new album couldn't even knock our DMB from their top spot. Congrats, again, DMB!

The Review... Part Two!

"So Right" is my favorite song on the album. In fact, it was my favorite song on the album before I even heard "Everyday" in its entirety! A friend allowed me a sneak preview of this song before the album was released, and I was immediately taken aback by the intro and happily stunned at the song's unwavering energy and the fun, "Tripping Billies"-like lyrics. The chorus is memorable, fun and... dare I say... it's got a good beat and makes you want to dance?! :-) One caveat: I think this would have been a perfect opening song for the album!

Next up is "If I Had it All". In the first few seconds, you think it's going to be a dreamy ballad, strains of a soft (and unique on this album!) acoustic guitar starting out the song... and then, it turns darker, but still beautiful as Dave speaks his notoriously poetic words: "if I had it all... I'd f*** it up." The bridge (Carter Beauford on the drums! Carter Beauford on the drums! Carter Beauford on the drums!) and the cool sound effect after it are breath-taking. This is my second favorite tune on the album.

I stopped dead in my tracks when "What You Are" started. With all the talk of how we would barely "recognize" DMB's sound on this new album, I was surprised at just how "old school" this tune is. Reminscent in sound and subject matter to the Middle Eastern-tinged songs "Minarets" and "Last Stop," the lyrics question life... and God... and perhaps even Dave's insecurity about being adored by so many who take his words to heart:

"I walk into this room
Oh, all eyes on me now
But I do not know the people inside
They look straight through me, these eyes
Seeking more wisdom than I have to give away..."

When I first heard the rumor that a song called "Angel" was appearing on the new ablum, I secretly hoped it would be "Angel from Montgomery." Now that I've heard Boyd belt this one out live, I know I would love to hear a studio version of it, but, alas, I was disappointed. And I'm disappointed in "Angel" overall. I've mentioned before that I'm not a big fan of slow love songs and that DMB were the only band that could force me into liking them... but their charm doesn't work on this one. To me, it's -- for lack of a better word -- boring. Okay, so the "candy" lyric is pretty catchy, but it doesn't redeem the entire song.
