I've been searching for an explanation as to what has happened with DMB's work with Steve Lillywhite. As you have probably heard, the band and producer have parted ways and Dave has begun to work with a new producer. The worst news is... some of the songs previously recorded with Lillywhite (songs like "JTR" from the Summer 2000 tour) may be scrapped altogether.
Well, I haven't quite found an explanation for the controversy. No additional comments have been released by DMB, and I haven't seen any statements or press releases from Lillywhite himself. What did I find in my research, you ask? I have found that both of these producers are responsible for extensive -- and varied -- bodies of work! Garageband.com recently reported that Steve Lillywhite's work in the music industry began more than 25 years ago. Granted, back in the early seventies, he wasn't producing platinum records -- he was a "tea boy" at Polygram Records. The site compares this job to the American equivalent of being a "gopher" or a go-for. Seems Lillywhite paid his dues running errands for record execs befor he hit the big time! Eventually, Lillwhite moved into engineering and mixing at the same company and five years after he started working as an errand boy, he was recruited to help create a demo for the band Ultravox. By the mid-80s Lillywhite had worked in production with a wide variety of musicians and bands, including: Siouxie and the Banshees, U2, The Thompson Twins and the Psychadelic Furs. Most significantly, he worked on U2 albums from 1980 to 1991. The 90s saw Lillywhite producing Phish, Peter Gabriel, and of course, DMB. Here is an incomplete list of Lillywhite's production credits. You will find his discography in its entirety at the All Music Guide.
