DMB 101: Meet Leroi

After amassing quite a cult following in the early 1990s due to relentless touring, the Dave Matthews Band released their first studio album "Under the Table and Dreaming" in 1994. The album, containing a hidden track called "#34", debuted at number 34 on the Billboard chart.

The first single from the album, "What Would You Say?" held the honor of being the "most-added-single" ever by a debut artist in the adult album alternative radio format. In layman's terms, this means that more radio stations with an AAA format put "WWYS?" in rotation in one week than any other single by any other debuting artist or group, any other one week. This bullet put DMB on the map, and the rest, as they say, is history!

This is the first in a series of "Meet DMB" articles. This week, meet Leroi Moore, woodwind player for DMB.

Leroi Moore

He is undoubtedly the most conservative of the members of DMB, quiet and reserverd, standing off to the side of the stage and hiding behind his ever-present sunglasses. But Leroi's shy nature can't mask his astounding talent. Leroi plays multiple instruments at every show and on every album, something that would be daunting to your average musician. But not Leroi -- he masters them all! So just who is the man behind the mask?

Vital Stats
Although he was born in Durham, North Carolina, Leroi did his growing up time a little bit to the north in Charlottesville, Virginia! Charlottesville is where all of DMB met, so it must have been fate that he ended up there!

Birthdate: 09/07/61. So, Leroi just celebrated his 39th birthday this past September.

Repeat After Me
According to popular opinion, Mr. Moore's first name is pronounced "Lehroi" not "Leee-roy." Also acceptable is: "Hail king of all woodwinds." ;-)

Instruments
Leroi plays no less than 10 different instruments. Those of the woodwind and horn variety -- tenor and soprano saxaphone, flute, etc.

What's with the Shades?
You rarely see Leroi without his sunglasses, especially if you're watching him on stage. He has been seen sans-shades in a few videos. But why the shades on stage? Word is Leroi tends to be a little bit on the ansy side when he is performing -- nothing more than good old fashioned stage fright!

Musical Influences
Not suprisingly, Lerois sultry style has been inspired from a number of sources, including family, jazz and R&B: his mom. Charlie Parker. Earth, Wind and Fire. Herbie Hancock.

Next Week: Meet Stefan!!
