It's tough playing the waiting game. Especially when what you're waiting for is highly anticipated. It's been more than two years since the Dave Matthews Band released their last studio album, "Before These Crowded Streets". Fans are starting to get restless. The outcry: it's time for the new album!
Fans' cravings have been curbed by appetizers, which include the live album "Listener Supported" and the forthcoming (and long-promised!) fan club recording available to members of the Warehouse, the official fan association; but for most DMB fans, that just won't do the trick. They want more. They want new. They want it now! While DMB was initially building their fan base, their songs became well known among concert attendees. The fans would record the shows and share tapes with their friends. So, many fans have sung along with songs like "Ants Marching" to since the early 90s! One can see why the appetite for something new is so rampant. But will the album consist of all truly new material? Rumors of the answer have ranged from definitely to mostly. Steve Lillywhite -- producer of the new album -- recently commented about the new songs at the official DMB site. He said that even the songs fans know from concerts sound like new songs because they have evolved from when the band was first playing them. DMB fan Matt Martin says it's worth the wait: "I feel like a kid at Christmas when a new DMB CD comes out. Even if I've heard the songs before, it's like getting a brand new toy. But when you get to hear new stuff... that's the icing on the cake." Ah, the sweet taste of new DMB goodies! Matt continued, "I haven't heard any of the new stuff except snippets online. I'm starting to get a little anxious." Perhaps that anxiety will be quelled by some recent comments coming from the DMB camp. Dispelling the old adage that no news is good news, it's a relief to hear band members comment on the album's sound and style -- it must be nearer to completion than we heard. It already has style! That's got to mean something! Dave Matthews was recently quoted in the "Denver Rocky Mountain News" as saying "[The album has] a similar vibe of the early days, when the band was rehearsing together... sitting in a circle together." Although the subtitle of the article read "Matthews Running Late on Album" it is somewhat comforting to hear an update from Matthews himself about the album's vibe... much better than the "we're working on it" comments of earlier this year.
