You Might Be a Drill Team Member if...Part Two

© Kathryn Morton

Last week, I started a list of characteristics I found I and other people on drill teams have developed. Here is the remainder of my observations:

You might be a drill team member if...

  • You have ever bought an album specifically for it's "danceable" tunes
  • Dancing is one of the first items you write down when asked to list your hobbies
  • You have ever found a pair of lyrical sandals, tap screws, or other dance items in your purse or wedged in the back seat of your car
  • Your parents yell for you to "Come watch this!" when they see a dance show on TV
  • You own or wish you owned shirts with dance slogans
  • Scrunchies, rubber bands, and barrettes are your favorite hair accessory
  • You spend your fall Friday nights at football games
  • You know your school fight song and alma mater by heart, and are frustrated by people who don't
  • You have a variety of towels, shirts, and accessories in your school colors
  • You mark time when you hear a marching band cadence...even if it's on TV
  • You find yourself walking in step with people in the hallways
  • For you, the school year is divided into football, contest, and show season--not merely fall and spring
  • Your work schedule is arranged around after-school practices
  • If your team practices in the mornings, you have perfected the art of rolling out of bed and being at school in half the time it takes your non-drill team peers
  • Kneepads are your friends
  • You have experience selling chocolates, cheeses, and other obscure, expensive goods to raise money for your team
  • Puffy paint and glitter are a must for your home desk set
  • You smile when "the music is on"
  • When at Subway, you say "Yes ma'am" for each condiment
  • You have a "big or little sister" on your team even if you are biologically an only child
  • When you meet someone, you start talking about your drill team in 10 minutes or less
  • Your lucky numbers are your tryout numbers
  • You have ever called your mom in tears begging you to bring her some nylons, bobby pins, or shoe polish
  • You can curl up in half a bus seat and fall asleep

I love going to the American Dance/Drill team camps every year. This year we went to Kansas for a camp instead of having a private camp. It was so fun but weird also since we were all from Iowa. But ...

American Dance/Drill Team School is an awsome place to go for summer 4 day camps, 1 day clinics, and has the nicest, sweetest, courtious instructors around. I am very partial to Jannifer Eubanks. Sh ...
