You Might Be a Drill Team Member If...

When I speak with my friends who are also on - or have been on - drill teams, I find that we have a lot in common. There are things that drill team just does to you. For the next two columns, I have compiled a list of characteristics that I have noticed in myself and other drill team members. Enjoy!

You might be a drill team member if...

  • You get upset when all you can find at Disney World is a CHEERLEADER Minnie
  • Your furniture in your room is arranged to create the largest open space possible
  • You pop out of your chair and start dancing to the theme songs of commercials
  • Carpets in your house look well-loved
  • You dance around the classroom at school, especially in classes with laid-back atmospheres
  • You critique the technique of dancers you see on TV or in other performances
  • ESPN is not a "sports" channel to you
  • Even if you are terrible at math, counting to eight is no problem for you
  • You are planning on or have already bought stock in bobby pins
  • You have an entire drawer or box filled with old costumes and practice clothes
  • If seated, you cannot listen to music without mentally choreographing a routine in your head
  • If able to move, you start dancing when you turn on the radio
  • You can apply full dark make-up in five minutes - BONUS points if you can do it while seated in the back seat of a moving bus
  • Hallways are a place to practice leaps
  • People have ever made fun of your feet (dancer's feet)
  • You own more leotards than you do formal dresses
  • You can fix anything with safety pins
  • You look at street clothes and see possibilities for practice outfits
  • You are disappointed when poster catalogues or racks don't have any, or a suitable variety of, dance pictures
  • Dance shoes, props, costumes, and other memorabilia are a part of your bedroom decorating scheme
  • A broken toe is more than an inconvenience
  • Dance merchandise and costume catalogues are captivating reading material
  • Seeing someone do the splits does not send you into shock
  • Stretching is not just something you do for a few seconds when you roll out of bed in the morning
  • Anyone who says drill team and dancing in general is not a challenging physical activity must work HARD if they ever want a CHANCE at getting back on your good list
