Being sick really bugs drill team people

Sniff, sniff. Cough, cough.

I am just getting over a cold. I hate being sick. I hate being sick even more when I have drill team practice or dance class. There's nothing like trying to go across the floor when your nose is running, or trying to do a routine when all you want to do is stop and cough.

But it's so easy to get sick on a drill team. People share water bottles, lipstick, T-shirts and stand right next to each other in the kick line. Germs and viruses love those scenarios. And, as I found out, germs don't wait for a specific time of year to get you sick. You can get sick just as easily in crazy spring weather as you can when it's freezing outside.

I've done some searching to find a few sites that can help you and your team keep yourselves in good health as spring show approaches.

One of the simplest things you can do it wash your hands. At the Lambton Health Unit site, there's a list of times you should make it a point to wash your hands, as well as some instructions for effective hand-washing. (No, putting your hands under cold water for a split second does NOT do the trick.)

There's an excellent article from Redbook magazine online that has sections on avoiding the "Office Bug" (or, in this case, the drill team bug), "This Year's Flu Bug," "Schoolroom Strep" and the "Buffet Table Bug." There's also a section with tips for getting over your illness if you do catch one.

And if you catch a cold, there's more information for treating it at the Care of the Common Cold (Wellness Center) site and the Common Cold site.

Best wishes for a healthy show season!

Note: Yes, I'm back after a long absence. My apologies. I'm changing my columns to monthly instead of weekly so that I'll be able to bring them to you in a more timely fashion rather than always being late.
