It's Homecoming season again! Time for mums and football games and big to-dos. I know of a number of schools that have already had their Homecoming football games (I know mine has) but I thought I would still write a column about the event ... to prolong the celebration.
Cindy Nick wrote a wonderful article titled "Homecoming... And American Tradition" which appears on the Dance Drill Team Directors of America site. Nick addresses several aspects of Homecoming--from dances to alumni celebrations to mums to half-time routines. I recommend the article to anyone in charge of planning Homecoming activities. On the subject of Homecoming, I have a little story. Last year was my first in college. I still had many friends on my high school drill team, and I very much wanted to see "my team" perform at a football game. Homecoming seemed the perfect time to visit. After all, I'm an alumna ... am I not supposed to come visit? Evidently it's not expected because a lot of people asked me, "Kathryn, why are you here for THIS game?" The students and my drill teammates thought I was a little odd until I explained my logic. Homecoming is a chance to catch up with old friends. Sure, one shouldn't dwell in high school years, but friendships made in those times are worth cherishing. Two websites I've found that are excellent for finding old friends and schoolmates are Classmates.com and High School Alumni.com. If you haven't already done so, register on the sites so that friends and classmates can keep in touch. There are hundreds of high schools on the list, so you can look up friends from around the country as well. You may also want to check out your high school's homepage if it has one. You can look in the LookSmart High School Directory for your high school. Don't forget to look at your television next week to watch the 1999 College Partner Stunt National Championship from 11-11:30 p.m. EST Saturday, Oct. 23, on ESPN. The 1999 Co. Dance National Championship is airing 1:30-2:30 p.m. EST Sunday, Oct. 24 on espn2. Go To Page: 1
