By the time Labor Day rolls around next week, the majority of drill teams around the nation will share more than just high kicks and jump splits in common: they'll be back in school.
Most dance and drill teams are in some way affiliated with an educational institution, whether it be an elementary, middle or high school or a college. Because of this involvement, it's important to take school just as seriously as a field jazz. Many teams have grade point averages that must be met or exceeded to stay on the team. Doing well academically can be a challenge when you aren't worrying about Friday night's football game or making the next week's line. It's tempting to make school work a low priority or to get overwhelmed by it. So here's a back-to-school survival kit for the busy drill team member. Feel free to use what I've found when you're in a crunch for time and need help with your research paper or homework assignments. You can probably find one for a dollar in your grocer's school supply aisle, but dictionaries are also *FREE* online. If you are using AOL, you can check out The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary by clicking on the link go to AOL Keyword: Collegiate. Also on AOL, there's a Merriam-Webster Thesaurus at AOL Keyword: Thesaurus. You can save yourself trips back and forth from the shelves of encyclopedias (the letter you want is ALWAYS missing when you need it.) with Compton's Encyclopedia Online Encyclopedia.com is another place to look for more in-depth references. The site features more than 14,000 articles from The Concise Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia. And it's free. Have a teacher who wants you to use more references than just an encyclopedia? Try looking up your subject at the Alta vista reference desk or the Yahoo! Reference page. America Online also has a Research and Learn section which features extensive database and search sections. When the time comes to pull together your paper, start out with an audience-catching saying from the Quote of the day site. You can look up quotes by subject and other criteria at this site. Another neat place for writing help is Researchpaper.com. Here you'll find an idea directory (Don't you love it when teachers tell you to cover "anything that interests you" and you can't think of a thing?), a research center and chat rooms where you can exchange ideas with other students.
