A week for the strong

National Dance Week kicks off April 24

These days, there's a week for everything. There's a Fire Prevention Week, and Earth Week ... even a National Electroneurodiagnostic Week. (And I'm not pulling your leg on that last one. Here's proof!)

Guess what? There's a dance week, too! Hooray!

It's not a dance/drill team week, but maybe there will be one of those someday. However, it's still exciting to know that April 24-May 2 is National Dance Week. This year's theme is "Dance For The Health Of It," and Shirley MacLaine is the 1999 National Spokesperson.

The NDW web site states that "the campaign's mission statement is to raise public awareness to the inherent benefits of Dance in our society."

The annual event is sponsored by United Dance Merchants of America. Throughout the week, dancers will have opportunities to participate in workshops, seminars, presentations, performances, and other events in conjunction with NDW. The web site features more information about the activities, the week itself, and about how the National Dance Association is writing letters to the President of the United States "requesting a Presidential Proclamation be issued in recognition of NDW and will also be presenting a similar request to the United States," according to the site. Directions for participation are available on the web page as well.

And to top it all off, International Dance Day is Thursday, April 29.

On television this week: 1999 College Cheerleading & Dance Team National Championship - Division IA Dance Finals - 1 p.m. Eastern - Sunday, April 25 - espn2.
