Two cents for tryouts

© Kathryn Morton

Happy April!

Goodness, how time flies! Almost three years ago this month, I tried out for my high school drill team for the first time. What an exciting and nerve-wracking week it was!

I've received a few letters from readers and have read message board posts asking for tips to make their tryouts successful, so I've dug around in my links and have found a few sights that should give you some inspiration.

The American Dance/Drill Team School site has a few articles by Joyce Pennington, owner of the company. Officer candidates will want to read the officer tryout tips Pennington has to offer, and those auditioning for a drill team line can read the line tryouts advice. Anyone auditioning for a drill team may be interested in looking at the tryouts score sheet explanation that Pennington has compiled. It may not give you an exact copy of the sheets your judges will use, but it will give you a good idea of what to expect at tryouts.

Drill Team Exchange also has some excellent tryout tips. And be sure to stop by Vanessa's Dance 101 and Erin's Dance 101 for these dancers' personal advice.

For audition tips from a slightly different point of view, check out Jane Donovan's article on Successful Auditions on the DanceArt.com server.

If you have any tryout tips, feel free to share them by posting in a discussion for this article.

One article I've recommended before and recommend again is What Does Failing Mean? by Gavin Freeman. You may be a very talented dancer, but sometimes, you might not always make it... and that's okay.

Best of luck to everyone with upcoming auditions. Do your best, take care of yourself during tryouts (and always) and learn from the experience. Life isn't always fair, but remember that everything happens for a reason. Keep following your dreams, but don't be afraid to change them. And even if you don't reach every one of your goals, keep dancing for dance's sake!

Don't forget...
