Naked Ladies

I have been having such negative body image issues lately. I know this is typical for a dancer, especially one who has become a mother in the past year. Well, it is over a year now but I still struggle. I am a little embarrassed to be telling you about this. I am an adult, a dance teacher and choreographer. I counsel my friends on this topic all the time. I feel that I should be above this problem but I am not. The past few times at ballet class have been particularly stressful for me. I had planned on writing a whole article about this. But alas, something happened in my non-dance life that I must share; in a roundabout way, it relates to body image.

I belong to a mom's group so I can meet other moms and find playmates for my 16 month-old son. Each month, we have an event called "Mom's Night Out." I am shy. I have never attended Mom's Night Out before this month. There were five of us attending, including my best friend, Krista. The place: Kabuki Hot Springs in San Francisco.

So we sign in and wait on a bench, and then they called my name and Krista's name. We went to pay and get our locker key and the cashier says, "Have you been here before?" and we say "No" and she gives us this tiny piece of paper with instructions. Then she says to get to the communal baths "turn right at the Buddha." Off we went.

We find our way down the hallway to the locker room. What we find is a roomful of naked women. There is a door-sized window in the locker room looking out on to the communal baths--more naked women. Naked women everywhere. Krista and I were a little nervous. We waited for our friends to come to the locker room. Patricia says, "Well too bad, we'll just be the dorks with the swimsuits." Elaine mentioned that she didn't think anyone would like to look at her three c-section scars anyway. Phoebe was worried that her breast milk would leak out. I got changed and started reading the instructions, hoping I could memorize the whole thing so I wouldn't look too out of place, despite my swimsuit. Usually I would be very uncomfortable wearing just a swimsuit, but in this situation, I was not. Was it because I had on more clothes than most? I am not sure.
