New Year’s Resolution: Dalmatian and Owner to get more ExerciseA more expensive hobby to undertake with the Dalmatian is rollerblading. In order to do this the owner must purchase rollerblades, elbow, wrist, and knee guards, racking up a bill of at least a couple of hundred dollars. But the calories burned may be worth it. A 20 minute rollerblade session at a moderate 9-10 mph burns around 150-175 calories per hour. Rollerblading works leg muscles better than if jogging, and with less impact, producing nearly the same aerobic fitness that running does. Instead of a collar and leash, the Dalmatian should be wearing a harness with a leash attached to it. This is less stressful on the dog, taking the pressure away from its neck area. Before bringing the Dalmatian along rollerblading it is important that the blader have the basics down first, especially braking and balancing. The temptation is there to let the Dalmatian pull the rollerblader, but instead a rhythm should be found to keep the dog alongside at a heel and try not to let it get in front. The first time my Dalmatian ran in front of me on rollerblades, she came to an abrupt stop. All I remember before I fell is poor little Katy looking over her shoulder with a terrified look on her face. Very considerate of me to make sure no harm came to my cute little dog! No matter which fitness activity you try, always keep an eye on your Dalmatian making sure it is not panting too hard, limping, or showing other signs of distress. Travel with a backpack that includes a jug of water and a small dish for water breaks for the exerciser and Dalmatian. Check the dog's paws when you're finished to ensure no injury has occurred and wipe them down. Check the rest of the Dalmatian's body to make sure no other injuries, such as tangling with a blackberry bush, go undetected. Play it safe, take things slow to start, and these are just a few of many great, healthy exercise options that will leave both owner and Dalmatian relaxed and happy.
