Fall Planting Time

It's Fall Planting Time

Fall is always an exciting time for me as that's when I plant my bulbs and do general rearrangement of my gardens. This year, in addition to replanting my large daffodil beds that I described in last month's article, I am rearranging my miniature beds.

I don't have as many miniature as I do standard daffodils, but I find the miniatures much more exciting and interesting for both garden and show daffodils. Just for instance, I love to come home in the spring and be greeted by the bright colors of Tete-a-Tete, Golden Quince, and Jumlie planted in my circle garden pictured here in it's fall "cloak."

These three daffodils are in beds of 50 or more bulbs, and are joined by such old favorites as Minnow, and Andulusia. There are other standard daffodils in this bed of both show, heirloom, and garden varieties, however, it's the miniatures that attract me most. I drive my car very slowly past as I enjoy the bright colors on the way to the garage.

However, it's not these bulbs that I have to move this fall and find a new home. Prior to this year I had my miniatures in my large daffodil bed, however it was far from the house and I wasn't able to look at them without a major effort on my part. So this year, I decided to put the miniatures close, and put them in every little nook and crany that I can find. I want to stand in my window and see my miniatures in bloom.

This small place is the steps down from the back of my house and the patio to the back sidewalk. This is an area about four feet long by a foot and a half deep. It is improved soil that is mostly sand, and in that area I plan on planting a fairly large group of Hawera 5Y-Y. A very beautiful miniature that is a favorite world wide. That way, every time I go out the back door of my house, Hawera will be there to greet me.

The other area that I plan on planting the majority of my miniatures is across by back yard against the fence on both sides of the arbor and gateway to my early daffodil garden and what little of an orchard that I have planted. You can see the bags of composted manure that I have stacked up there and waiting to be put in the ground.
