Daffodils, May 8, 2001

The green eye in the cup and the shortness of the cup in 'Dell Chapel' gives away the division 9 heritage. It's a beautiful little daffodil, I just don't know why it took so long to decide to bloom this year.

Another of those daffodils that show a lot of division 9 poeticus breeding is 'Ardmillan' that is classified as a white small cupped daffodil with a green eye, white along the barrel of the cup and an orange ring. You be the judge that it has less or more green in the eye than 'Dell Chapel'.

Each year since I've been growing and showing daffodils I have made the comment that, "this year isn't a normal year for daffodils," as something was skewed each year. I've solved the puzzle this year, the answer is simple, "there is no normal year for daffodils, except the year that you are presently having."

That's it, just enjoy and grow your daffodils. Just don't forget to grow those beautiful short cupped and poeticus daffodils. They are what daffodils are all about, and they bloom late enough that you have nice weather to go out into the garden and enjoy them.
