Daffodils, the Last Week in April© All Photo's by Clay Higgins
Daffodils, the Last Week in April, 2001
This picture is 'Golden Aura' a Division 2 large cupped daffodil from my garden and was best in show at the Morristown, NJ, Daffodil Show, on April 19th. Usually this flower would be bloomed and gone by the 15th of April. 'Golden Aura' is one of the daffodils that I was given by Marie Bozievich in 1995. It just goes to prove that the older daffodils will still win when raised properly.
'Freedom Rings' as shown in this grouping of three, is another of my mid season daffodils that should be gone by the 19th of April, but was in contention for the best vase of three in show at Morristown. This flower is unique in that it is division 2 large cupped daffodil, with yellow petals with a very distinguished pink cup. This is one of those daffodils that I acquired from Grant Mitsch Daffodils in Oregon.
This next collection of mid season daffodils is a unique daffodil with a color code of 2YYW-Y. In my garden it is a light yellow, or lime color that makes it's name true to it's color. There is a white ring around the base of the petals next to the cup. When I first obtained the daffodil from JR Pearson of Hofflands Daffodils in England, I thought it to be a reverse bi-color because the entire flower was so light. This is a picture of a Bozievich Award of 12 daffodils of at least four divisions. I'm very proud of this one because of the diversity of the stems included.
This collection, front row from left to right is Triller 7, Tonga 4, Merlin's Castle 3, Magic Moments 3, Wishing Well 7, and Wild Honey 2. The back row are Areley Kings 2, Goldhanger 2, High Society 2, Altun Ha 2, Irish Ranger 3, and Corbiere 1. The next day, Saturday April 20th, we were at the Shelter Island, NY, daffodil show. It was a great adventure, as you had to drive all the way to the Northeast point of Long Island, NY, and even after that, the only way to get on the island is by ferry. The best intermediate in this show was an interesting little large cupped daffodil called 'Pink Ice' 2W-P, or white with a pink cup. In my garden, the daffodil grows with the very rim of the pink cup frilled with a ring of white.
