The Third Week in April

I said that I didn't have anything in bloom this last week when I wrote the Article on April 12th. Just a few days later, and some warm weather, sunshine, and 80 degree weather changed thing to look like this in my show beds.

All is now happy at Fox Run Daffodils. Yes the "world of daffodils" is coming together this week. The weather is warm enough for air conditioning for the first time ever this year, and just right for trees and daffodils to bloom. This picture is of our driveway, or lane that leads from Foxlair Road down to our house, a distance of about 340 feet.

There are those flowering pear trees that make such a spectular show in the spring, but don't produce all the fruit to litter the ground in the fall. I think they are Chicago, a sister I'm told of the Braeburn. But, to me they are just beautiful trees that line my drive. What do I know, I'm the daffodil man?

As far as daffodils go, take a look at this sweep of a daffodil called 'Carlton' 2Y-Y at the roadside in front of our house. I obtained 'Carlton' from Old House Gardens up in Michigan. This is what daffodils is all about.

You can see our house down behind the trees. However, in a couple of more weeks, it will be hard to tell if a house is down that lane. There are a number of daffodils that came into bloom this week. One is 'Rapture' an early cyclamineus daffodil. It won the best of the divisions 5 through 9 at the Washington Daffodil Society.

It's that time for the early daffodils. This cyclamineus is one of about 20 division 6 daffodils that are blooming in my garden. I had so much fun with my cyclamineus daffodils at the Washington Daffodil Society show. I put in for the most difficult award, the Carey Quinn Award for the best 24 stems of standard daffodils, using only divisions 5 and up. Usually, this award goes to the most prestigious daffodils, the trumpets and large-cupped daffodils. The judges had no since of humor and just passed my offering by without a second glance to their discredit - no sense of humor.

Other daffodils that are putting on a show are the trumpets and large cupped daffodils. Just so no one will think all daffodils are yellow, this all white trumpet, 'April Love' won best in show at the Washington Daffodil Society Show, held at the Longwood Gardens, in Maryland on April 14-15, 2001.
