Daffodils the Second Week in April

The American Daffodil Society had it's National Convention and Daffodil Show, and our local show for the Washington DC metro region will be judged on the morning of April 14th. Friends that went to the National Show are reporting that they went with nothing on the 3rd or 4th of April and came home on the 7th or 8th of April and everything was in bloom. This is a picture of my daffodils as taken at about 6:00 P.M., on April 10, 2001.

There is not much to show. The only thing in bloom is 'Rapture', 'Swift Arrow' and 'Dovekie'. Hardly anything to take home to the show, or to Mom. We had 84 degree weather yesterday, or they would not be as advance as they are. None of my fruit trees are in bloom. It's like if I were living on the North Pole, here in Maryland, about 25 miles North by West of DC. In years gone past the daffodil season would be half over my this time of the month.

The best garden I have is the front garden that is combined with crocus, dwarf iris, "grape" hycinths, and chinodoxia. The mulched area looks barren still, but there are 'Itzim', 'Tete-a-tete', 'Jet Fire', and 'Jumblie' in abundance in front of the green azelea and boxwood foundation plants.

This picture is of a first year naturalized garden that is designed to have something in bloom from summer to frost. It still needs a little work, however, it will do for now. I like to look at flowers when I arrive home after a long days' work.

I have much better luck at my "neighborhood" garden that I planted along the street in front of our house. It's in full sun and well drained. It has many 'Carlton' in background with a couple of 'King Alfred' to the left, a clump of 'Rejvnald's Early Sensation' in the middle, and a border of the miniatures 'Little Beauty' and 'Tete-a-Tete' near on the right. This being the second year, we are hoping to get the clumping effect in the future.

This garden is not yet in full bloom. However, I'm in high hopes for the 15th when some friends will be coming over for their annual look at my daffodils. I just wish I had something to show.

Maybe next week. So until then.

I live in the DC area and would like to know the approximate peak time for Ice Follies.
